We Improve the Society, the Economy, and the Environment through Reuse
Each citizen can participate by reusing materials to:
- Promote the idea and the benefits of reuse
- Reduce landfilling
- Collect high quality materials
- Help people to have access to goods
- Create a positive local/social impact
- Create new jobs
The Reuse Centers (RC) of the Region of Western Macedonia are local non-profit collection and distribution centers for materials. They enhance creativity, reduce waste, promote collaboration, improve living conditions and the environment through citizen awareness and active community participation. The ΚΔΕΥ centers, located within or adjacent to the existing Local Waste Management Units (in Kozani, Eordaia, Kastoria, Florina, and Grevena), consist of simple building infrastructure used for sorting and storing materials and include display areas for the materials.
Their operation is managed by DIADYMA in cooperation with the municipalities, and they may also be supported by social economy organizations. In addition to their core functions, the ΚΔΕΥ centers also serve an informational and educational role. Various events are organized in these spaces, such as material exchange events, themed reuse festivals/markets, and similar activities. These initiatives play a significant role in shifting citizens’ mindsets and perceptions regarding consumer behavior, waste management, and the value of materials.
Furthermore, the RCs are a bridge of communication between decision makers and citizens, in the effort to promote the idea and the benefits of reusing materials, so that less waste is end up to landfilling. They have environmental and socio-economic dimensions. Sensitive and vulnerable social groups with basic deficiencies in their essential daily needs find the necessary goods and at the same time create new jobs.
The specific objectives of the Centers for Creative Reuse of Materials are:
- Gradually promote and implement Waste Prevention Actions, as required by current legislation. "Prevention" means measures taken before a substance, material or product becomes waste, achieving a) reducing the amount of waste, including through reuse of products or extending the lifecycle of products, b) reducing negative impact of the generated waste on the environment and human health; and (c) reducing the content of harmful substances in materials and products.
- To inform and raise awareness to the citizens about the need to reduce waste production.
- Improve consumer behavior by promoting sustainable consumption.
- To increase the lifespan of goods, materials, and products through reuse.
- Lay the groundwork for the gradual implementation of “Pay As You Throw” waste management programs.
Every citizen will be able to either deliver items that are in good condition and do not need them, or to obtain materials from the premises of RCs, free of charge.
Materials collected for reuse are divided in the following categories:
- Books - Stationery - Office supplies - Stationery
- Household utensils (dishes, glasses, kitchen utensils, etc.)
- Household items-Decorative
- Personal care items (hair dryers, shavers, etc.)
- Tools (all types)
- Electrical & Electronic Appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, PCs, small appliances, etc.)
- Clothing - Footwear - Accessories - Travel items
- Linen (towels, sheets, etc.)
- Carpets - carpets
- Furniture items (chairs, tables, sofas, composites, etc.)
- Hobbies-Activities (various types)
- Toys (various types)
- Children's items (baby items, child seats, etc.)
- CD / DVD (movies, music, games, etc.)
- Pet items (houses, cages, toiletries, etc.)
- Seasonal items (Christmas, Easter, summer, etc.)
Materials should:
- Be in good condition / functional
- Not to be worn to such an extent that they cannot be reused
- Electrical appliances to operate
