Bulk Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Sorting and Slicing Unit

Bulk Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Sorting and Slicing Unit

The construction of the Unit was completed in September 2013, and it operates with maximum dynamics in terms of processing bulk MSW, 5100 tn/year. The Unit consists of the following main areas:

  • Bulky waste reception area and manual sorting or sorting by mechanical grabbing of recyclable materials
  • Bulk waste shredding unit, with metal recovery system
  • Temporary storage space for other separately collected waste (eg tires, glasses, metals / scrap)

To date, all the bulky items-waste collected by the Municipalities of Western Macedonia region and delivered to the 10 Local Waste Management Unit (LWMU) of DIADYMA.

The bulk management in the unit includes firstly the recovery of useful materials for recycling (by hand sorting or grabbing), then shredding the bulk while retrieving metal materials (via a built-in magnet carried by the shredder) and finally collection of shredded materials. The recovered materials (mainly plastics, metals) are sent for recycling, while the shredded materials are landfilled at the landfill. The further management of the shredded materials for energy utilization is systematically investigated.
