Biowaste management

Biowaste management

The system is based on the separate collection of biowaste in urban & semi-urban settlements and the application of home composting in rural settlements. In Urban & Semi-urban settlements, it is selected to implement the program of Separation at Source of biowaste from homes and businesses, with brown bins and a separate collection of green waste and garden waste. The pre-selected biowaste collected from the brown bins (responsibility of the local authorities), is transferred to the 10 LWMU of DIADYMA. There they are uploaded and temporarily stored in special closed containers. After filling, the containers are transported by container transport vehicles (hook type) to the facilities of the composting unit, where they are either emptied in the reception area or parked in the space so that there is a constant continuous flow of raw material in the unit. Their composting is done in IWMCF and especially in MBT, either in a separate line from the mixed ones, or separately utilizing part of the existing facilities of MBT. In the optimal desired case, when the entire target of the pre-selected biowaste is recovered with separation at source, the treatment is done in a separate line within the MBT utilizing the closed composting boxes under construction. For smaller recovered quantities, the composting can be done with the method of series in the existing areas of the MBT (maturation area, etc.). Refining takes place at the existing MBT refinery.

In rural settlements, but not exclusively (it can be applied in general in all settlements with familiar with available space), it is chosen to apply home composting.

For the implementation of the program, the supply of bins and collection vehicles and household compost bins is in progress and the equipment of both the Municipalities and DIADYMA will be fully utilized in terms of collection vehicles, infrastructure, and transshipment vehicles, as well as facilities of MBT.
