SAHW Management


The SAHW are the Small Amounts of Hazardous Waste contained in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). The SAHW from the MSW are grouped in terms of the ways of their collection and management, in the following three (3) sub-groups, with the aim of their proper management:

  • The SAHW that fall under the National Collective System of Alternative AdministrationThe SAHW that fall under the National Collective System of Alternative Administration
  • Other SAHW (not covered by the National Collective System of Alternative Administration)
  • Household medical waste

The SAHW that fall under the National Collective System of Alternative AdministrationThe SAHW that fall under the National Collective System of Alternative Administration

This group includes:

- Small electrical & electronic appliances
- fluorescent and low energy lamps, as well as
- household type batteries

whose management falls within the National Collective System of Alternative Administration

Other SAHW (not covered by the National Collective System of Alternative Administration)

This group includes:

- waste in empty packages containing or in contact with small quantities of residues of dangerous substances (<10%)
- hazardous construction materials with their packaging (from paints, adhesives, varnishes, other materials containing solvents)
- chemical waste in its packaging (biocides, plant protection products, disinfectants, and detergents)
- pressure vessels (aerosols, etc. and non-refillable fire extinguishers)
- printing waste (inks, toners)

Household medical waste

This group includes medical waste of the category Hazardous Waste Purely Infectious and in particular:

- sharp objects (needles),
- infectious waste from home care (gauze, catheters, etc.)
- other hazardous waste (expired medicines, mercury thermometers)

DIADYMA plans, in the framework of the LIFE18-IP CEI-Greece Circular Economy Implementation program in Greece, the implementation of an integrated program of separate collection and proper management of this waste, in order to remove it from the stream of mixed MSW.
