Description:

Specific Objective: RSO2.6 – Circular Economy

The CARED project is a cross-border initiative focusing on the Prespa basin, a sensitive and biodiverse area shared between Greece and North Macedonia. Its main goal is to transform agricultural waste into valuable resources for rural development, environmental protection, and the promotion of circular economy principles.

Activities will be implemented equally on both sides of the border — in Florina (Municipality of Prespes, Greece) and Pelagonia (Municipality of Resen, North Macedonia). Both areas face serious environmental challenges related to the management of agricultural residues, including open burning, pesticide container disposal, and soil and water pollution.

By introducing an integrated cross-border system for agricultural waste management, the CARED project aims to reduce environmental risks, protect biodiversity, and create local employment opportunities through sustainable practices.

Role of the Partners:

  • Our ΔΙΑΔΥΜΑ Α.Ε.
  • The Municipality of Prespes (Greece) will lead the local implementation, organize training sessions for farmers, and promote community engagement.
  • The Municipality of Resen (North Macedonia) will act as leader of communication and awareness, carrying out public information campaigns and events.
  • The Public Communal Utility Proleter (North Macedonia) will provide technical expertise, coordinate waste collection, and ensure the proper operation of the equipment and facilities.

Main Activities and Deliverables:

  • Development of an integrated cross-border agricultural waste management system, including shredders, compost mixers, collection bins, and transport vehicles.
  • Creation of a digital monitoring platform for waste flow management and traceability.
  • Construction of biobeds for the safe treatment of agricultural chemicals and residues.
  • Organization of training seminars and workshops for farmers and local authorities.
  • Implementation of New European Bauhaus (NEB) actions linking circular agriculture with aesthetics and sustainability.
  • Pilot applications in selected agricultural areas of Prespes and Resen.

Expected Results:

  • Reduction of soil and water pollution caused by agricultural waste.
  • Increase in the reuse and recycling of agricultural residues.
  • Implementation of circular farming practices across the Prespa basin.
  • Capacity building for farmers and local operators in sustainable waste management.
  • Recognition of Prespes as a pilot area for green agricultural innovation.
  • Creation of new local jobs in waste collection, recycling, and circular economy services.

CARED is expected to lead to:

  • Lower waste management costs for rural communities,
  • Improved farming practices and soil health,
  • Enhanced biodiversity protection,
  • Strengthened cross-border cooperation in one of Europe’s most ecologically and culturally valuable regions – the Prespa basin.

DIADYMA’s role:
