Description:

Priority Axis: PRIORITY 1 – A greener and more resilient Greece-Albania cross-border region Specific Objective: RSO2.6. Promoting the transition to a circular and resource efficient economy

DIGITAL is a strategic cross-border project under the Interreg IPA Greece–Albania 2021–2027 Programme that promotes circular economy practices through the integration of digital tools in urban waste management. By adopting the innovative “Earn As You Throw” (EAYT) approach, the project aims to increase recycling rates, reduce landfill waste and support low-carbon, climate-resilient communities.

Within the project framework, smart bins equipped with sensors, magnetic cards and precision weighing systems will be installed in Greece (Municipalities of Eordaia, Ioannina and Corfu), while sensor-based waste monitoring systems will be introduced in Albania (Regions of Berat and Himara).

The DIGITAL project strengthens cross-border cooperation, promotes citizen engagement and encourages sustainable resource use, benefiting more than 290,000 residents in both countries. Through close collaboration among local authorities, civil society organisations and citizens, the project seeks to improve waste management, enhance quality of life and secure a sustainable future for the entire cross-border region.

Expected Results

  • Increased recycling rates and reduced waste directed to landfills.
  • Improved efficiency and transparency in waste collection and management through digital monitoring systems.
  • Enhanced citizen awareness and participation in circular economy initiatives.
  • Strengthened cooperation between Greek and Albanian local authorities.
  • Contribution to the creation of low-carbon, climate-resilient communities.

Expected Benefits

  • Installation of smart waste management infrastructure in selected municipalities.
  • Establishment of a cross-border “Earn As You Throw” network.
  • Development of a digital platform for waste monitoring and data management.
  • Strengthened capacity of public authorities to implement sustainable waste strategies.
  • Measurable environmental and socio-economic benefits for the participating regions.
